Though Chile spans 38 degrees of latitude, the country is roughly only 200 miles wide, creating the unique conditions for a great variety of locations within short distances. Along with California, it is one of the few places in the world where a morning shoot by the ocean and an afternoon one in the mountains is possible.
Santiago, the capital, is the most modern city in South America and can easily stand-in for many American ones. Downtown Santiago is often referred to as “Sanhattan”, and its suburbs resemble the North American suburbia.
Seasons in Chile are the opposite of the US and Europe. The summer months are December, January, and February, while the winter months are July and August. It is a country of contrasting climates. The only environment missing from Chile is Tropical. The North is deserted and semi-arid. Central Chile, home to most of the population, is of temperate Mediterranean type climate. As one continues South, the climate is Temperate oceanic first and reaching Subpolar Oceanic in Southern Patagonia.
